Although no longer the country's official capital, Yangon remains Myanmar’s largest and most economically and culturally important city, and as such most reflects the changes that have occurred since the country reopened to the world. Yet in many ways Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon, has hardly changed at all. Shwedagon Pagoda, an awe-inspiring golden Buddhist monument around which everything else revolves, remains the spiritual and social heart of the city. Radiating out from Shwedagon, wide avenues lead to more pagodas, shrines and temples, along with the parks and lakes that provide everyone with an escape from urban bustle. The Eravati Sule Grand Yangon

The Eravati Sule Grand Yangon occupies the former New Law Courts, located at the junction of the city’s famous Strand and Sule Pagoda Roads facing the north bank of Yangon River. A Scottish architect, Thomas Oliphant Foster, designed the building, which was constructed between 1927 to 1931.

Shwedagon Pagoda

Visible from almost anywhere in Yangon, this is one of Buddhism’s most sacred sites. The 99-meter-tall zedi, or stupa, adorned with 27 metric tons of gold leaf and thousands of diamonds and other gems, is believed to enshrine eight hairs of the Gautama Buddha as well as the relics of three former Buddhas. Four long, graceful entrance stairways lead to the main terrace which, depending on the time of day you visit, can be quiet and contemplative or bustling. If you prefer serenity, then visit in the cool of dawn. Otherwise, pay your respects when the golden stupa flames crimson and burnt orange in the setting sun.

Botahtaung Pagoda

Botahtaung Pagoda’s spacious riverfront location gives it a down-to-earth spiritual feeling. Its original feature is the dazzling zigzag corridor, gilded from floor to ceiling, which snakes its way around the hollow interior of the 40-meter-tall golden zedi, or stupa. Also, look out for a bronze Buddha that once resided in the royal palace in Mandalay and a large pond full of hundreds of terrapin turtles.

Pagodas

Chaukhtatgyi Pagoda

Housed in a large metal-roofed shed, this beautiful 65-meter-long reclining Buddha is hardly publicised at all, even though it’s larger than a similar well-known image in Bago. The statue’s placid face is topped by a crown encrusted with diamonds and other precious stones.

This site is on Shwegondine Road, about six kilometers from the hotel. Taxi or hotel limo is the most convenient means of transport.

Ngahtatgyi Pagoda

Across the street from Chaukhtatgyi Pagoda is a gorgeous 46-foot-tall seated Buddha image at the Maha Satkya Atulamanaung Ngahtatgyi, or in short, Ngahtatgyi Pagoda. Sitting in a calm gold-and-white pose, it is one of the most impressive sitting Buddhas in southern Myanmar.

Bogyoke Aung San Market

Bogyoke Aung San Market is situated in the heart of Yangon between Sule Pagoda and the Central Railway Station. Opened by the British in 1926 as Scott Market, the cavernous roofed market is divided into 21 sections roughly organized by product. Highlights include gems, local art, longyi, antiques, furniture, textiles handwoven by Myanmar’s ethnic minorities, traditional puppets, old coins and inexpensive household goods.

The market is conveniently reached by taxi. Or you can also experience the streets of Yangon by walking to the market from The Eravati Sule Grand Yangon.

Theingyi Zei Traditional Market

Most of the merchandise at downtown Yangon’s largest market is ordinary housewares and textiles, but the market is also renowned for its large selection of traditional herbs and medicines, which can be found on the ground floor of the easternmost building. We recommend taking one to two hours to fully experience the market.

Turquoise Mountain Artisan Workshop

Traditional crafts tell powerful stories of people and place and nowhere more so than at the workshop organised by the Turquoise Mountain Foundation under the auspices of the Prince’s Charities, sponsored by the Prince of Wales. Meet the artisans and witness these masters passing on to their apprentices the traditional techniques of transforming gold into delicate jewellery. Visitors learn about the Crafts Programme mission and the history of gold jewellery in Myanmar, and the techniques and designs inspired by centuries-old Myanmar motifs.

The Artisans’ Workshop is located at 14/15 21st Street, Lower Block, Latha Township, a 15-minute taxi ride from the hotel.

Yangoods

Everything at Yangoods speaks of Myanmar, whether it’s reproductions of vintage Myanmar posters, faux-vintage wall clocks branded with Myanmar script or handbags imprinted with historic local product ads. Popular souvenirs include a large variety of sepia portraits of old Burma, throw cushions covered with handwoven ethnic textiles and hand-crafted jewellery.

The main shop is at 62 Shan Gone Street, with branches at Bogyoke Aung San Market and Le Planteur, a 8-minute taxi ride from the hotel.

Augustine’s Antiques & Souvenirs

Augustine's started business in 1978 and is renowned for antique traditional silver bowls, betel nut boxes and brass and copper-ware. A selection of vintage furniture, woodcarvings, textiles and ceramics is also on hand, along with exquisite Myanmar lacquerware, both vintage and new.

The antiques & souvenirs shop is located at 25 Attiyar Street, Kamayut Township, approximately 22-minute taxi ride from the hotel.

Bonjour Gallery

French interior designer and architect Patrick Robert began his long career as a designer for Christian Dior fashion house in the 1960s, and later curated exhibitions for the Centre Pompidou and Cooper Hewitt Design Museum. His one-of-a-kind showroom in atmospheric Bogalay Zay St. carries original art, home accessories and furniture inspired by the finest traditional Myanmar design. Highlights include handmade lacquerware of many shapes and colours, fabrics woven from lotus fibre, raw silk and indigo linen, decorative items incorporating gold, steel, jade and rubies, and original paintings and sculptures.

The Bonjour Gallery is located at Bogalay Zay Street (Middle Block), Botahtaung Township.

Parks

People's Park

This recently renovated park is notable for its splendid views of the west side of Shwedagon Pagoda. Pleasant features include flower gardens, ponds, fountains, including one made up of rings of white elephants, and tree observation platforms linked by swinging bridges.

The park is located on Pyay Road, near Western Stairways of Shwedagon Pagoda, Yangon.

Parks

Kandawgyi Lake

Also known as Royal Lake, this artificial lake, built by the British as a reservoir, is most attractive at sunset, when the glittering Shwedagon is reflected in its calm waters. The boardwalk, which runs mainly along the southern and western sides of the lake, is also an ideal place for an early morning jog or stroll.

Kandawgyi Lake is located near the city center, approximately four kilometers from the hotel. We recommend taking a taxi.

Museums

U Thant House

Explore the life and times of U Thant - writer, life-long public educator, and third Secretary-General of the United Nations - at his former home. Restored in recent years as a museum and discussion center, the house is part of the colonial-era Windermere compound, where U Thant lived in the 1950s while serving as a secretary to the late Prime Minister U Nu. A peaceful garden features native plant from around the country.

The house is open Friday through Sunday and is located on 31 Panwa Lane, Kamayut Township. Our concierge can arrange an appointment on other days upon request.

Museums

The Secretariat

Taking up an entire city block, this massive brick Victorian monument took the British 16 years to build before it finally opened its doors in 1905. The southern entrance features a double-helicoidal, wrought-iron staircase with banister finials bearing the face of Queen Victoria. On 19 July 1947, independence leader Aung San and six cabinet ministers were assassinated here by armed paramilitaries. After independence, the building fell into disuse and was closed to the public until 2011, when a restoration project began converting the historic building into offices, retail space and a museum.
